Practice Description
If you struggle with a thyroid condition, fatigue, or hot flashes/feeling cold all the time, soothing Acupuncture from a hormone specialist could benefit your health immensely. I would love for you to view my 2-minute Acupuncture Introductory Video at www.ThyroidAcupuncture.com . Dr. Gigi Shames specializes in Hormone Health (Thyroid, Adrenal, Menopause), Stress & Anxiety, Physical Pain. I was strongly encouraged by my doctor father and nurse mother to pursue a career in Traditional Chinese Medicine; today as an Acupuncturist I work in San Rafael and Cotati alongside my father Richard Shames MD, author of the hormone guides Thyroid Power and Feeling Fat Fuzzy Or Frazzled? My father and I collaborate extensively on benefiting your health using the very best modalities of East and West. As a child I had a "needle fear" myself & so have cultivated a very gentle acupuncture technique, to ameliorate my patients' fear yet maximize the efficacy of this 5,000 year-old medicine. I know what it is like to be so tired you can barely function, as I recovered from thyroid depletion and adrenal fatigue just a few years ago. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine were instrumental in my recovery, and I am so grateful to now be able to extend that same benefit to others. In addition to Acupuncture, I create high-quality granulated herbal prescriptions individually tailored to your specific symptoms and tongue and pulse findings. These aspects help address not just symptoms but also the root cause of your health conditions, so the problems stop recurring as you become healthier internally. For thyroid, menopause, pain/stress, and for helping your child stay on a more even keel during adolescence, contact Preventive Medical Center for an appointment with myself, Georjana Shames LAc Dipl.OM CMT, in San Rafael or Cotati. Brief massage is often included in your session. Additionally, I can offer you a free phone or email consultation prior to your coming in to the office, so that we can discuss your specific conditions and determine if Acupuncture is right for you. AcuPages.com Q&A

Q: Why did you decide to be an acupuncturist?
My doctor father and nurse mother recall that as a toddler I used to cry and cry because I wanted desperately "To heal people" but I did not yet know how, and I was unable as a 3-year-old to grasp the concept that there existed training schools and methods of learning the various modalities of medicine. I thought you either knew when you were born, or you did not, and it was terrifying that at my advanced age of 3 I had not mastered the concrete skills required to practice medicine yet. My parents were very sweet and encouraged me to pursue a medical career, especially one geared toward integrative care and Acupuncture. And finally, at the age of 16, I set foot onto my Acupuncture path when I was working for Diane Monteil LAc in Mill Valley, CA. She became my mentor in high school and college and during my undergraduate training in psychology, sociology, and anthropology at the State's Honors College of Florida, I flew to California for a special month of observation at her clinic. I delved into the literature on Chinese Medicine, I stocked her herb pharmacy, and she taught me to read pulses as she treated patients with digestive complaints, muscle aches, mental illness, addictions, morning sickness, fatigue. There I fell in love with Chinese Medicine, and to this day I am awed and inspired by the versatility of Acupuncture's techniques, so ancient in its roots yet so effective in solving the health conditions of contemporary life.
Q: What work/education experience makes you a better acupuncturist ?
I know exactly what it's like to feel too tired to function in the world. If you are exhausted, if you cannot warm the kind of cold that resides deep in your bones, if you are constantly wired & tired with insomnia and fatigue, if you ache for rest but cannot fully relax, I understand. Everyone in my family has a thyroid condition. My MD father and RN-PhD mother are thyroid experts for that very reason. I became a thyroid Acupuncture specialist to help others who struggle with thyroid problems and do not realize how much they can benefit from Acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs helped me recover from thyroid depletion and adrenal fatigue stage 3 (and there is no stage 4; stage 4 would be adrenal failure). I can empathize with you when you walk into my office suffering from hormone imbalances; I struggled with a congenital thyroid condition (Hashimoto's hypothyroidism) since adolescence and through that propensity compounded by a stressful lifestyle I developed adrenal fatigue in my early 20's. I felt at first like I would never recover, but the ancient techniques of Acupuncture to strengthen my physical stamina and hone my mental acuity proved priceless. My physical body, emotional health, immune system, memory and cognition, all benefited. I set out to determine how to best use Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to assist people struggling with thyroid or adrenal conditions, chronic fatigue, infertility, addictions, aches and pain, muscle weakness, depression and anxiety, menopause, hot flashes or cold hands and feet, insomnia, allergies, digestive trouble, and all the large or small ways in which we feel we do not have enough energy for daily life. It is proverbially said "Physician, heal thyself." I have come to understand through my own healing how to best benefit you with Acupuncture and custom Chinese Herbal formulas. I found treatment methods that really worked, so that I did not have to suffer from fatigue or low energy my whole life -- Neither do you. You can feel revitalized, energetic, balanced! You can be fit and healthy and enjoy a sustainable lifestyle. I am confident I can help you. Please view my 2-minute Acupuncture Introductory Video for more information at www.ThyroidAcupuncture.com & I look forward to hearing from you soon.
