AcuPages.com Q&A
Q: Why did you decide to be an acupuncturist?
I began my career in healthcare in 1992, treating amateur and professional athletes with manual therapies for injury care, rehabilitation, and prevention. Realizing the limitations of manual therapy, I pursued further education, completed my M.S. in Oriental Medicine, and became licensed as an acupuncturist in 1998.
Q: What work/education experience makes you a better acupuncturist ?
I completed a year-long course in Acupuncture Orthopedics with an internship in China to complement my exising knowledge of musculo-skeletal conditions and sports injury. I have also been an athlete all of my life which also helps me understand the body-mind-spirit of those who see me for orthopedic complaints.
I had a completely natural pregnancy and birth, taking herbs and receiving acupuncture throughout the pregnancy and laboring for 16+ hours ("back labor") without the use of drugs/anesthetics. This experience helps me better treat all aspects of life for the pregnant and laboring woman.
My youngest patient was 3 years old and the oldest was 96 which gives me a good range of experience for the techniques needed to accommodate any age. (Not to mention treating my own infant since birth)
