Acupuncture for Eye Twitching Sickness

Constant eye twitching can be a very frustrating and aggravating thing to experience. This condition has many causes but few successful treatments. Some neurosurgeons may try injecting Botox into the muscles surrounding the eye in order to try to stop the twitching but the success of this is limited at best. Is acupuncture effective for eye twitching?

So what exactly causes blepharospam or constant eye blinking or twitching? Extreme stress or strain can this on. Being overly anxious, panicky or nervous can cause blinking or twitching. Some facial nerve disorders can cause tics and twitches of the eye. Certain medications such as anti-psychotics can cause Tardive dyskenisia in which constant blinking of the eyelids is a side effect. Being overly fatigued or having insomnia can cause twitching of the eyes. Hyperthyroidism causes the eyes to be overly dry and will cause them to blink constantly. This problem can be a symptom of Tourette’s Syndrome as well.

There is a self-administered acupuncture point that can be applied to help this disorder. It needs to be massaged or applied for certain periods of time in order to help or greatly diminish this problem. The self administered treatment is done like this. First you want to hold your right hand with the fingers loosely apart. Look at the bottom of the v between the thumb and the forefinger on the hand. You then measure 1.5 centimeters straight down from the bottom of the v. This is the He Gu acupuncture point. Then take a blunt long object and apply pressure to this point for a period of time.

You can apply constant pressure or you can massage and roll the blunt end of a pencil or ink pen along and over the He Gu point for the recommended period of time. The recommended time for this treatment is 30 minutes to 2 hours per day. People who have used this have reported that they had success with this self treatment. If you are unsure as to how to administer the pressure or where to apply the pressure yourself, it would be wise to consult with a licensed acupuncturist and have sessions done to take care of this.

In addition to the self applied acupuncture treatment, you should be eating a nutritious diet and drinking plenty of fluids. Water is best as it allows the body to flush toxins. Adequate amounts of sleep are important during this time as well due to insomnia might exacerbate this condition.
