Herbal Treatment For Food Allergies
Allergic reactions to foods occur when the body reacts violently to foods or other seemingly benign substances. The immune system treats these as they are a foreign body, causing an allergic reaction to that substance. Reactions to food will occur within two hours of ingesting it and cause symptoms such as hives, itching, and swelling of areas including the face, mouth and tongue. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Less common symptoms that have been reported include sinus congestion, headaches, frequent earaches and bedwetting.
Reactions to food are progressive in nature. Repeated exposure to foods that cause these reactions become more severe each time a person is exposed to them. These episodes can become life threatening and if this happens, medical personnel should be called immediately for emergency care.
The most common foods that cause problems such as this are shellfish, nuts, dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese, eggs, wheat, and some processed foods. Food dyes and preservatives such as MSG have been reported to cause allergic reactions as well.
The easiest and best way to stop these reactions is to refrain from eating the foods a person is allergic to. However this is not always possible. There are herbal formulas to help reduce the severity of the allergic reactions when exposed to said foods in a person’s daily life. These herbal formulas need to be taken on a daily basis for a period of time before results will be realized. It will take time to repair the damage that has been done to the immune system.
This is an example of such a formula. An herbal tea can be made of Chamomile, Marshmallow Root, Peppermint, Ginger, and Echinacea. Steep 1 teaspoon of each herb in 2 cups of boiling water for 10-15 minutes and strain the herbs out. Drink one to two cups of this preparation daily.
Marshmallow Root and Echinacea work to repair the immune system in this tea while Chamomile, Peppermint and Ginger work together to soothe and repair the inflammation that is aggravating the digestive tract. These herbs will combat the allergic reactions and help to reduce the severity and frequency of the reactions themselves when taken regularly.
