However, this procedure may well replace the surgical facelift in the future. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been used by the Chinese for thousands of years to treat ailments and to prevent problems with the Qi or the energy giving life force.

The Chinese believe that if the Qi cannot flow in the body, the resulting blockages in the energy flow will cause illness, disease, or dysfunction. By using acupuncture and herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine they work to release the flow of Qi. By accomplishing this, the body has the natural ability to heal itself.

So exactly how does cosmetic acupuncture work? Well first you have to understand the process in how skin is damaged. A study done in 1996 by UCLA showed that free radicals caused most of the damage to our skin. This includes our puffy eyes, bagging, wrinkles, fine lines, and paper thin skin.

Free radicals are the little stinkers that are produced in our bodies that cause damage to our skin cells. They worm their way into our skin cells and just as a pin pops a balloon, they destroy the outer lining and integrity of the normal skin cell. The skin cells then release the normal collagen and elastin back into the blood stream. This causes the skin to wither and wrinkle or bag.

Cosmetic acupuncture works by helping to replace and restore the skin cells back to their younger and natural integrity. In addition to promoting flow of Qi, this type of acupuncture works to stimulate the nervous system, the endocrine system and the circulatory system to increase the production of collagen and elastin which in turn replaces the old skin cells with normal healthy skin cells. The result is younger, healthy looking skin.

Cosmetic acupuncture does require a course of several treatments in order to get maximum benefit. However, this procedure has some great advantages that will make it very tempting for most women to try! It is not invasive like surgery. It also has no side effects which cannot be said for surgery, botox or laser procedures. It costs much less than other more invasive procedures. This makes it available to women who in the past could not have afforded other more expensive procedures. These advantages alone make it a great way for women to get that younger look they have been wanting without all the hassle of surgical procedures or injections, or the high cost of those procedures!
